Robert A. Manuel, Sr., 71, of Mays Landing, formerly of Philadelphia passed away on August 21, 2012.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, he retired from Boeing Helicopters after 37 years of service. He served in the US Army during Vietnam. Bob was an avid car and hot rod enthusiast.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dolores E. (nee: Carter), four children, Robert, Jr. (Ellie), Melissa Selcuk (Gokalp), Mark (Amy), and Michael (Kelly), 10 grandchildren, his sisters Joan Delzell and Barbara Harmon, and numerous other relatives and friends.
A viewing will be held on Friday, August 24th, from 10am-12noon, at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., where services will be held at 12noon. Burial will be in the Atlantic Co. Veterans Cemetery of Estell Manor, NJ.

Joseph A. Gardner Sr., 67, of the Weymouth section of Hamilton Twp., suddenly passed away surrounded by his loving friends and family on August 27, 2012.
Born in Philadelphia on April 18, 1945, Joe lived most of his life in Weymouth and was a graduate of Oakcrest High School. Before retirement he worked for the Township of Hamilton Public Works Department as a mechanic and operator. He had a passion for cars. As a result he was an avid NASCAR fan. He also loved fishing with his family. Joseph dedicated his whole life to his family and loved all that life had to offer.
Joe will never be forgotten by his loving wife of 48 years Julia, his sister Marie, his daughter Jolene, sons Joseph Jr. (Kelly), and Frank, daughter-in-law Gina, grandchildren Felicia (Tim), Krystle, Lynn, Julie, Joseph III (Hilary), Tyler, Janel, Marlieanna, Frank Jr., Kyle, and Trent, great-grandchildren Kaylee and Levi, several nieces and nephews, and numerous other relatives and friends.
He was sadly preceded in death by his mother Nellie, father Fred, sisters Helen, Shirley, Sally, Jean, and Dolly, brothers Fred, Richard, Robert, and Little Johnny, his daughter Audrey and his son Jerry.
Relatives and friends are welcome to celebrate the life of Joseph on Saturday, September 1st, 10am-12pm, at Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing where services will be held at 12. Please dress casual.

Violet Bannister (nee: Rickard), 75, of Mays Landing, passed away on August 31, 2012. Violet was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2000. Alzheimer’s did not win; rather the disease enriched our family and provided a circle of love and care.

Violet is survived by her husband, Alfred and children: Billy (Joyce), Johnny (Jean), David (Bobbi Jo), Brian (Marla), and Lisa; her 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather and celebrate Violet’s memory on Thursday, September 6th, from 10am-12noon, at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, NJ, where services will be held at 12noon. Burial will be private.

Barbara Silverman, (nee JERNACK), born July 28, 1936, went home to be with our Lord on September 3, 2012. Barbara is survived by her husband Sol of 30 years; son, Mark Denice and wife Susan; grandchildren, Olivia and Austin; step daughter, Randi Nwigwe and her husband, Chidi; grandchildren, Christian and Jonathan, stepson, Bryan Silverman and wife Peggy Silverman; sister, Patricia Happle; and Aunt, Joan Senkeviech and family. Barbara is predeceased by her parents, Sophie (Rudnicki) and Michael Jernack.
Barbara was born in Paterson, lived in Clifton, Little Falls, and finally, moving to Mays Landing, NJ in 2000. Barbara and Sol enjoyed travelling to Europe and Israel. Barbara worked as an interior designer throughout many years of her life and was a devout Catholic. Barbara was a member of Holy Face Monastery in Clifton, and enjoyed their yearly picnics. She received home visits and communion through Father Gannon of Camden and was often accompanied by good friend, Betty Kendall and her husband Hank. Barbara enjoyed watching church sermons in her home and welcomed the visitations of family and friends.
Services are at Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main Street in Mays Landing on Friday, September 7, 2012 between the hours of 11AM and 12:30PM with burial immediately following at Holy Cross Cemetery in Mays Landing.

Philip Groen, Sr., 83, of Mays Landing, died Sunday, September 2, 2012. He was born in Hoboken on December 27, 1928.

Preceded in death by his wife Shirley and son Philip W. Groen, Jr., he is survived by his daughter Nancy and her husband Kenneth of Dorothy; his two sons John and wife Shanna of Mays Landing and William and wife Bernadette of Mays Landing; grandkids William Groen, Jr., Andy Tobias, and Samantha Groen; and three great-grandchildren.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was employed at Ruffu Ford as an auto mechanic until he retired. In his leisure time he liked junking and fixing old trucks and cars.

Services will be private.

Thomas, MaryEllen (nee: Carty) 64 ~ of Mays Landing passed away suddenly on September 1, 2012. MaryEllen went to be reunited with her loving husband of 45 years, the late, Raymond J. Thomas (Jan 30, 2012).
MaryEllen was born and raised in Atlantic City, daughter of the late CATHERINE (STELLA) CARTY AND OWEN CARTY.
MaryEllen is survived by her daughters Donna Rossell and Denise Thomas, three granddaughters Gabrielle, Angelena and Adriana Rossell ~ whom she loved and adored very much ~ her siblings Robert Carty, Eleanor Murray (Richard) predeceased by her sister Kathleen Branca. Half Brothers and Sisters: Bernice Ettmueller Hand, Doris Hanson (Alfred) predeceased by Owen, George, Richard, James and Harry Carty and sister Grace Stewart and NUMEROUS other relatives and friends.
MaryEllen’s greatest joy was in spending time with her daughters/granddaughters. She enjoyed the simple things in life such as gardening, cooking, making ginger bread houses, playing games, Bingo was an all-time favorite. She was an avid reader also enjoyed crossword puzzle, putting together a puzzle and ceramics.
A viewing will be held on Friday, September 7th, from 4-6pm, at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where reflections will be shared at 6pm.

Elaine De Leeuw (Van Hook) went to be with the Lord on Sept. 3, 2012, after several months of illness and subsequent hospitalization. She was married nearly 69 years to her devoted husband, John De Leeuw, Sr. Their marriage was blessed with six children; John, Jr. (deceased) and Lois DeLeeuw Kolano, as well as adopted sons, Matthew, John E., Jason and Christopher DeLeeuw. Grand- children are Joseph Birnie, Rebecca Birnie, Christine Birnie Jegadesh, Adrianne Kolano, Elisa DeLeeuw Banzinger, Mason DeLeeuw, and Natalie DeLeeuw. Denay and Joseph (Jr.) Birnie are great-grandchildren and Jayden is their great-great-grandson.
Elaine and John are originally from Passaic but moved to Emerson, NJ in 1951. After raising their family, they moved to Palm Coast, Fl where they lived for 15 years before returning to NJ to live closer to their family. John lovingly care for Elaine in their home and visited her daily while she resided at Innova Nursing Center.

Stanley H. Horton 84, passed away on September 2, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. He resided in English Creek most of his life. He was a self employed home builder in the area. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and was especially proud of his garden.

John O’Hanlon, 76, of Mays Landing passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 9, 2012 surrounded by his family.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, John was a lifelong resident of Mays Landing. He graduated from Holy Spirit High School in 1954 and was a past president of the Mays Landing Rotary Club and the Jaycees, Mays Landing Chapter. A member of The Republican Club of Mays Landing, he was elected tax assessor to Hamilton Township in the early 1970’s and served one term.
John worked at Wheaton Plastics for over 20 years as an accountant before beginning a career in the casino industry. He retired from Harrah’s Casino Hotel as a key license surveillance officer in the late 1990’s.
After retiring, John lost sight in both eyes but remained active in the community. He was a member of The Absecon Lions Club as well as an active participant in the John D. Young Memorial Lions Blind Center. He was a contact volunteer with Cape Atlantic Contact until the last few weeks. In 2008, he was honored with the Donald J. Sykes Award because of his commitment to the visually impaired community.
In recent years, he enjoyed many friendships through the Mays Landing and Egg Harbor Township Senior Centers. He will be dearly missed by many who appreciated his sincere warmth and humor.
John is survived by his wife of 36 years, Beatrice, and their six children – Patricia Smith, Kimberly Gollub (Joel), Richard Jeffries, John Jeffries (Jillian), Sam Gale (Nina) and Erin O’Hanlon (Charles Keys). Also surviving are his mother-in-law Beatrice Serfi, his brother Tom O’Hanlon (Barbara) and sister Peggy Slota, both of Mays Landing.
His grandchildren were the apple of his eye, including Jessica Fuchs, Thomas Smith, John Jeffries, Jr., Jocelyn Jeffries, Sean Keys and Benjamin Keys.
A viewing will be held on Friday, 9:30 – 11:00 am at St. Vincent De Paul Roman Catholic Church, 5061 Harding Highway, in Mays Landing. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 11 am. Interment will be private at Union Cemetery in Mays Landing.

Anthony J. Ricci, 74, of Mays Landing, passed away after a lengthy illness, on September 10, 2012.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, and served in the US Marine Corps. Tony was the owner/operator of T. Ricci Roofing for over 40 years in the Philadelphia and South Jersey area. He was a very kind and generous spirit who could always make people laugh.
Tony will always be remembered by his wife of 53 years, MaryAnn (nee: Lancia), his 3 children, Michael (Linda) of Maple Shade, NJ, Dianna D’Andrea (Guy) of Bensalem, PA, and Linda Whaley of Egg Harbor Twp., 7 grandchildren; Gaetano, Anthony D., Anthony R., Talia, Michael, and Marcus, and Taylor Lee, 2 great-grandchildren, Kaliegh, and Hayleigh, his sister Louise Olson (Walter) of Philadelphia, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Lydia Cuadrado, 59, resident of Egg Harbor Township and formerly of Newark, NJ died surrounded by her family after a long battle with cancer on September 11, 2012.
Lydia was born in Lares, Puerto Rico and had been a resident of Southern New Jersey for 20 years. She enjoyed traveling, shopping, and spending time with her family and friends. She positively touched many people’s lives in her short 59 years, and she will be sadly missed by anyone who ever knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents Marcelino Perez and Rosa M. Perez.
Lydia is survived by her partner of 17 years Donald Pacentrilli; two daughters: Julisa and Ieaksa; and three grandchildren: Jason, Kira, and Nicholas. She is also survived by her sister Elsa Zaragoza; brothers Reinaldo Perez, Hector Perez, Ishmael Mercado, Johnny Mercado, and many nieces and nephews.
A viewing will be held on Friday, 9:30-11 AM at Blessed Sacrament Church, Jerome & Ventnor Aves., Margate, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Mays Landing.

Robert F. Greco, age 50, from Mays Landing, N.J. passed away unexpectedly on September 12, 2012.

Bob grew up in Edgewater Park, N.J. and graduated from Burlington City High School in 1980. Following college, he worked for Herr’s Food, Inc. prior to becoming an independent distributor of Tastykake products until his death. He is affectionately known to his southern N.J. clients as “Tastykake Bob”. His family and friends will remember his fun-loving personality and free spirit, especially when out enjoying music with them.

Bob leaves behind his wife, Diane Sherwood Greco and their grandson, Justin. Predeceased by his mother, Shirley Greco, Bob is survived by his father, Frank Greco, his brothers and sisters and their spouses: Tom and Ruth Greco, Mike and Lynn Greco, Patricia and Mike Iwanicki and Joanne and John Kaminski, and his in-laws, Barry and Sharon Sherwood and Doris Orrs. He will be missed by his very good buddy, Roger Livelsberger. Bob will also hold a special place in the hearts of his many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A service of remembrance will be held on Monday, September 17 from 5-8 PM at the Boakes Funeral Home, Inc., 6050 Main St, Mays Landing, NJ.

REGINA COMBS, 72 – of Absecon, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 13, 2012, at Absecon Manor. Regina was born in Hammonton and was a 1957 graduate of St. Joseph High School in Hammonton. She was very proud to have organized and lead the Sailorettes, a local twirling competition group, served as head Majorette in South Jersey Champ Band, and twirled with St. Joseph’s Drum and Bugle corps. Regina served as Township Clerk for Mullica Township, a position she proudly held. Later, she loved working in the casino construction field. She was an administrative assistant to the director of design and construction at Playboy, Bally’s and Showboat Casinos; and then moved onto assisting a construction manager in private industry.

One of Regina’s greatest pleasures was fashion. She designed and sewed countless formal attire, holiday outfits and school clothes for herself and her children. As her mother did, Regina enjoyed knitting and crocheting baby blankets and sweaters. But her greatest claim to fame was her mashed potatoes and gravy.

Regina is survived by her children Diane Weiss (Thomas) of Mays Landing, David Combs (Kristie) of Ovilla, Texas and Denise Vansciver of Mays Landing; along with her grandchildren Sarah Duca, Alex Combs, Julia Weiss, Benjamin Combs, Emmalee Vansciver, and Jonathan Combs; and great-grandson Matthew Duca. She is also survived by her sister, Anne Scudder (Manny) and Francis Kaiser (Christine), as well as several nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday, September 18 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main Street in Mays Landing followed by a brief prayer service. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Mays Landing.

Jones (nee Shinn), Thelma Pearl (aka “Chic”) 89 of Mays Landing – died peacefully 9/18/2012.

Thelma was born 8/22/1923 in Camden, NJ and raised on Main Avenue in Atlantic City where she had many happy childhood memories.

She married Fairfax (“Bud”) Jones and moved to Linwood. They built a house in Northfield where they raised three children Janice, Jeffrey and Steven.

Thelma lived in Pomona with her daughter Janice and granddaughter Misti before moving in with her son Steve, his wife MaryAnne and their children Lisa, Alison and Doug.

Her pride and joy in life was her grandchildren Misti, Lisa, Alison, Douglas, Leia, Donna, Eric and their families (including 9 great grandchildren). Thelma had a zest for life, family and friends.

She enjoyed ice-skating with the Atlantic City Figure Skating Club, playing cards at home, playing slot machines at the casinos, reading books and watching “The Price is Right.” Thelma was a living Angel to family and friends providing love, compassion, patience, understanding, encouragement and good times.

She was predeceased by her parents Willard and Pearl Shinn (nee Wilson), sister Eleanor Brunetti, brothers Robert Shinn and Ken Shinn, husband Fairfax “Bud” Jones, daughter Janice Price and son Jeff Jones.

Thelma is survived by her brother Richard (wife Martha) of Florida, cousin Alvin (wife Marianne) of Tennessee, her son Steve (wife Maryanne), her daughter-in-law Sharon Perna (husband Dennis) and niece Michelle Brunetti-Post (husband Kevin).

After 80 years, Thelma incurred her first major illness, cancer, which she fought bravely for nine more years.

We were blessed to have her love and affection for so long.
We love her so much and will miss her dearly.

Adele M. Jensen, 90 of Mays Landing passed away on September 23, 2012. Adele was born January 12, 1922 in Emmitsburg, Maryland to Herbert J. and Mary Bertha Miller. She was the second of sixteen children. An accomplished seamstress, she worked for various clothing companies in South Jersey, retiring in 1980. Adele was a dedicated 4-H Leader teaching young women the art of cooking and sewing. Adele worked as a latch key aide for the Egg Harbor Township School District in the 1990’s. She participated in activities of the Hamilton Township Senior Center and Hamilton Mall Walkers. She was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Church.

Adele is predeceased by her husband Walter L. Jensen, son Ronald E. Jensen, brothers Regis Miller, Bernard Miller, Donald Miller, James Miller, Kenneth Miller, and sisters Mary Genevieve Miller, Theresa Jensen, Josephine Little, and Irene Wantz.

She is survived by her son Walter F. Jensen (Charlotte), granddaughter Andrea M. Hawn (Joseph), and great granddaughter Aubrey E. Hawn of Mays Landing She is also survived by brothers Patrick Miller, Eugene Miller, Gerald Miller, and sisters Mary R. Topper, Louise Orndorff, and Dora Knott. Aunt Del will also be sadly missed by her numerous nieces and nephews. Adele will be fondly remembered for her kindness and caring for others, her delicious cooking and baking, neighborhood Easter egg hunts, and annual Christmas Eve party.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the St. Vincent de Paul Church 5021 Harding Highway, Mays Landing, NJ. A calling will be held one hour before the service. Interment will be in Union Cemetery.

Margaret Anna Davenport, 84, of Mizpah, left to be with her son on Wednesday, October 3, 2012. Born on June 20, 1928 in Minotola, she moved to Mizpah when she was five years old.

Margaret is predeceased by her parents Charles and Anna, husband Harry W., son Harry C., and brother Howard.

She is survived by her sons Eric Davenport and his wife Barbara and Jay Davenport and his wife Kelley; daughter and caretaker Sandy Crawford; son-in-law William Crawford; brother Charles; sister Dawn and her husband John; twelve grandchildren: Jamie, Danny, Eriana, Kennedy, Anthony, Courtney, Caitlyn, Dana, Kaitlyn , Joey, Donovan, and Angie; nieces and nephews: Tammy, Tracey, Hollie, Nicholas, Walter and his wife Rosemary, Mike, Jim, and David; and her beloved pets: Smokey, Huckfin, Precious, Pepper, and Sassy.

Margaret lived to open her heart, arms, and home to countless people over many generations. She will be greatly missed and always loved by all.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, October 6, 10 AM – 12 Noon at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where services will be held at 12 Noon.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, and mailed to St. Jude’s Tribute Program, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142.

Robert J. “Bob” Gasko, 92 of Mays Landing passed away peacefully on October 4, 2012 with his loving daughter Barbara by his side. Robert was born at his home in Bears Head on January 7, 1920. Robert was a lifelong resident of Mays Landing and attended the Atlantic City Vocational School in the auto mechanics program. He honorably served his country in the United States Army Air Corps, attaining the rank of Warrant Officer. Robert was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Mays Landing for over 50 years and served as a Deacon and an Elder.

Robert was an accomplished business owner, politician, and leader within the community. He owned and operated Gasko Pontiac, Buick, GMC. Inc. of Mays Landing for 40 years. Bob was a “mover and shaker” in local politics. He served as an Atlantic County Freeholder for 14 years; one of those years as Director. In this position, Bob fought to keep Mays Landing as the County Seat. Robert was a member of numerous organizations throughout his life including the CRDA, Atlantic County Vocational School, Greater Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce, Mays Landing Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, HTMUA, NJ Automobile Dealers Assoc., Atlantic County Auto Dealers, American Legion Post 254, Star Lodge #65 of Tuckahoe, Absecon Power Squadron, Mays Landing Yacht Club, Atlantic County Game Preserve, and the Local Civil Defense program. As a local politician, Bob had the privilege of meeting many high ranking political officials including, past Presidents, Governors and other Dignitaries. In his free time, Bob enjoyed hunting, boating, fishing (many tournaments), crabbing, farming and spending time with his family.

Robert is predeceased by his parents John and Julia Gasko, his son Robert J. “Bobby” Gasko Jr., his brother John Gasko Jr., his sisters Irene Tartaglione, and Lillian Gorman.

Bob cherished the time spent with family and was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his daughter Barbara Gasko-Aiken and her fiancé Tom Dowling, his grandchildren Eric Aiken (Kristin), and Erica Bowen (Tony), and his great grandchildren Kaden, Paige, Kacey and Cale. Robert also has many nieces, nephews, close family members and friends.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, October 10th, 5:30-8pm and Thursday, October 11th, 10-11am, at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St, Mays Landing, where services will be held on Thursday at 11am. Burial will be in Union Cemetery of Mays Landing.
