Stephanie Smith

Stephanie Merlock Blazek Smith of Dorothy went to be with her Lord on 16th July at the grand old age of 102 years. Born on 22 February, 1910 at the original Merlock Homestead in Dorothy, she was the youngest of 9 children born to Stephen and Antonia (Pavelenac) who emmigrated from Croatia in the late 19th century. Stephanie was preceded, in death, by her brothers Stephen, Blaze, Joseph, Peter, George, Andrew and sisters Mary and Anna.

She was married to Joseph Blazek, whom she called “the love of her life” for 29 years, from 1934 until his death in 1963. Stephanie later married John Smith, whom she called her “chef and companion” until his death in 1985.

Stephanie was educated in the Weymouth Township school system when it stretched from the Tuckahoe to the Great Egg Harbor Rivers. She has been a parishioner of St. Bernard d’Clairvaux Church in Dorothy, where she received all her sacraments, for 102 years.

During WWII she worked for the Sperry Gyroscope Company in New York City. Stephanie also worked at government contracted clothing factories in South Jersey and as a “nanny”. She was a diehard FDR Democrat who enjoyed playing cards, sewing, gardening, canning, ballroom dancing, and her little house on Pennsylvania Ave, in Dorothy. She often said that she “had traveled the whole country with her husband Joe, but the best place on earth was Dorothy, NJ.”

Stephanie Merlock Blazek Smith is survived by 5 generations of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, neighbors and her caretakers, grand nephew Andrew & Ethel Merlock, all of whom will sadly miss “Aunt Stephie.”

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, 11 AM, at St. Bernard’s Church, Pennsylvania Avenue, Dorothy, where a viewing will be held from 9-11 AM. Burial will be in St. Bernard’s Church Cemetery.

Louise Jean Barber (nee Bioletti) of Buena, NJ passed away Friday, July 27th at the age of 81.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband of 53 years, H. Bruce, son Joseph Gandolfi (Cary) of Florida, daughter Joyce Payne of Erial and her sister Adriana LaMacchia (Bioletti)

Louise was born in Atlantic City. Louise was the loving grandmother of Daniel and Jason Payne and great grandmom of Hayden and Hunter Payne. She was a special aunt to seven nieces and three nephews and the dear sister-in-law of Marion Patroni and Edith Kearse (William).

There will be a viewing from 9-11 am Tuesday morning July 31st at Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing. The funeral service will begin at 11:00am at the funeral home with burial immediately following at the Atlantic County Veteran’s Cemetery in Estell Manor.

Elmer Jacobs

Elmer S. Jacobs (Jake), born September 20, 1925, went home to be with the Lord on July 28, 2012 at his home with his family by his side.

Elmer was born and raised in the Frankford section of Northeast Philadelphia. He began his career in the automobile business in the early 1950’s relocating to Mays Landing, NJ in 1967 where he established Jacobs Chevrolet and Oldsmobile until his retirement in 1984. Elmer was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II and served as one of the original members of the Hamilton Township Industrial Commission. Elmer’s hobbies were baking pies and cakes to give away to family and friends, shooting pool with his buddies at the Oaks of Weymouth, and spending time with his children and grandchildren whenever possible.

Elmer was predeceased by his parents Charles and Kathryn Jacobs; his siblings Edward, Raymond, and Shirley; and his wife of 35 years Leona Elizabeth, to whom he was completely devoted. Elmer is survived by his brother Harry Jacobs of Greenville, SC.
Elmer will be dearly missed by his son Robert and wife Nevada of Lower Bank, daughter Mary Kay Ayers and husband Greg of Richmond, VA; and son Michael and wife Theresa of Seaville, NJ. Elmer was the proud PopPop to nine grandchildren: Nicholas, Melanie, Brian, Stephen, Laura, David, Phillip, Kathryn, Caleb; and one great-grandchild Seth Jacob.

Elmer’s pleasant smile and kind demeanor touched the lives of those who knew him.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather on Friday, August, 3, beginning at 10 AM at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 5021 Harding Highway, Mays Landing, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Mays Landing.

Ellen “Nancy” Faragasso (nee White) – of Mays Landing, NJ., passed away on Monday, July 30th, 2012 after a brief illness at the age of 76. Nancy was born and raised in Philadelphia. She was a long time worker for the Pantry Pride food store, and then later managed the Amazing Dollar Store.

Surviving are her loving family, daughter Debbie Grassi, son-in-law David, and her two grandsons, Dominic and Salvatore. She is also survived by brothers Andy (Maryann), Joseph (Marge), and Vincent, and sister Gerri, sister-in-law Dolores (Fran), along with many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Sunday from 10 AM to 12 Noon at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where a celebration of Nancy’s life will begin at 12 Noon.

Allen N. Rhodes, “Red” “Mickey”, of Mays Landing, went to be with the Lord on May 6, 2012. Born in Philadelphia, to the late Edward and Grayce Rhodes, the oldest of three children, he was raised in Mays Landing. He served honorably in the United States Army for 27 years. During his service in the Army he was stationed at the Berlin Wall, Korea, and Turkey. After his active service in the army he joined the Air National Guard and worked as a Fireman in Albuquerque. While in Albuquerque he earned his Bachelor’s Degree. He returned to Mays Landing in 1987.

He worked for the Hamilton Twp. Public Works Department and continued his work with the Air National Guard. He spent most of his life serving veterans. He was a member of VFW Post 220 in Mays Landing where he served as Commander and Quartermaster. He was also a District 16 Commander for the VFW, Editor the VFW State Newspaper, Public Relations Chairman for the VFW, and photographer for the Southern Region of New Jersey.

He was a member of the Military Order of the Cooties of New Jersey and Honor Degree of the VFW. He served as Junior Vice Commander, Senior Vice Commander, and Grand Commander of the Cooties (State Division). He also started Pup Tent 22 in Mays Landing.

He is a life member of the American Legion Post 254 in Mays Landing and Adjutant of the Atlantic County American Legion.

He served as President of the Vietnam Veterans of American, Chapter 825 in Mays Landing. This year he was appointed as Chairman of the Hamilton Township Veterans Advisory Board.

He was instrumental in helping to provide Military Honors at the funerals of many veterans in the Mays Landing area.

Allen was predeceased by his brother Patrick and daughter Diana Habing. Allen is survived by his wife Audrey (nee: Youmans); his children: Henrietta Barreras, Denise Feery, Patrick Rhodes, and Dwayne Rhodes; stepdaughters: Cindy Frankhouse, Linda Devers of New Mexico, Iris Johnson of Indiana, Sandra Powell, Angela DeCastro and Donna Moffitt of Middle Township; stepsons: Richard Patterson of New Mexico, Bruce Moffitt, and Guy Moffitt III of Florida; and his sister Joyce Fong, of CT.

Viewings will be held on Thursday evening 6-8 PM and Friday morning 10-11 AM at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where services will be held at 11AM Friday.

Burial with full military honors will be in the Atlantic Co. Veterans Cemetery in Estell Manor.

Jack Butler, 97, of Mays Landing passed away at home on May 30, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born in Philadelphia to the late Jay Clinton Butler, and Theresa (Reggett) Butler. He spent his early years in Philadelphia, then settled in Huntingdon Valley, PA where he & his wife raised five children. He moved to Mays Landing after retiring.

He was a Philadelphia fireman for 10 years, then was self employed in various businesses including the firewood business. He was the sole owner and operator of Butler’s Saw Mill in Langhorne, PA. Two weeks into retirement he felt retirement wasn’t for him and started another firewood business from home. He worked at that until he was age 88 and was known by all in the area for his strength, vitality, and honesty.

Jack had many great friends and a close, loving family. He was a devoted husband of 57 years to his wife, Louise, who with love and dedication cared for him until his passing. He is survived by his wife, Louise (Amadio) Butler. Children, Bruce Butler (Judith), Susan Butler (Will Gillespie), and Patricia Michael, all of Southampton, PA. Jacqueline Morgan, of Hammonton, Victoria Delano (Rick) of Mays Landing, and Michael Butler of Los Angeles. Grandchildren, Benjamin and Jake Delano, Vincent and Angela Butler, Eric and Dan DiLello, Jack and Lauren Persico and Lisa Birklebach. Great-Grandchildren: Dominic DiLello, Grace Tamburri, and Andrew and Eliza Birklebach. Also by many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Lucy (Smith) Bullock of Cape Cod, MA.

JUNE SMITH (SPRAGUE) 86 – of Melbourne, FL passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 of natural causes.

June was born to Earnest and Mary Sprague in Bradford, PA and raised in Duke Center, PA. After High School, she married Linton Smith. Together they had two children and shortly thereafter became widowed, June met Albert Peterson and together they raised Janice & Robert Smith. June worked for the City of Brigantine and was devoted to her children and loved spending time with her grandchildren. After raising their family in Brigantine, June and Albert retired to Melbourne, FL.
June is survived by son Robert Smith; companion Albert Peterson; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

June’s Viewing will be held on Friday, June 8, 2012 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main Street, Mays Landing, and Interment will immediately follow at the Laurel Memorial Park Cemetery in Egg Harbor Township.

Wesley Joseph Jesuncosky, 57 of South Seaville, passed away on Monday, June 4, 2012 after courageously facing the challenges of cancer head on. Born February 11, 1955 in Atlantic City, he grew up in Estell Manor, New Jersey. Wes graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1973.

He was also a proud graduate of Rutgers, The State University, class of 1979, with a degree in sociology. Wes always showed great compassion for youth and the elderly. He was an advocate for those challenged by physical and mental health issues through his work at Cape Human Resources, Division of Youth and Family Services and Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital. Wes also served as a member of the Board of Directors of The ARC of Cape May County. He was most recently employed at Golden Age Festive Travels in Wildwood Crest

He was an avid fan of the Scarlet Knights and a Rutgers Football season ticket holder for 30 years. He loved gardening, nature, fun with family and friends and was always up for a good party and a bargain.

He is survived by his sisters Nancy Buchanan and Betty Jean Webersinn, brother in-law John Webersinn, his nephew and wife Aaron and Michele Buchanan and his newly born great nephew, Nathanial James Buchanan and his aunt, Becky Williams. He was predeceased by his father and mother Wes and Betty Jesuncosky.

Friends are invited to share in a celebration of his life to be held on June 23, 2012 5-8pm at the The ARC of Cape May County, Faulkenburg House, 822 Route 47, South Dennis. Reflections will be shared by family and friends.

Jerry Gardner, 43, of the Weymouth section of Hamilton Twp., passed away surrounded by his loving family and friends on June 12, 2012.
A lifelong resident of Weymouth, he was a 1987 graduate of Oakcrest High School. He worked for Hamilton Twp. Public Works for the past 9 years.

Jerry enjoyed fishing and hunting, and was an avid UFC fan, Packers fan, and Nascar. He also had a passion for body art and designed all of his own tattoos.

He will be sadly missed but always loved by his wife of 23 years Gina M., his two daughters, Julie and Janel, his parents, Joseph and Julia, his two brothers Joseph, Jr., and Frank, his sister Jolene, several nieces and nephews, and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister Audrey.

Haas, Dr. Cheryl B., 44, of Troutville, VA passed away on February 13, 2012.
Born in Somers Point, she was raised in Mays Landing, NJ, and graduated from Oakcrest High School. She attended the School of Dentistry and Medicine of New Jersey, was a graduate of Cooper Hospital, served a three-year internship at Jefferson Hospital, and was most recently employed as a Trauma Physician at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, VA.
She was involved in all aspects of her passion for horses: while in college she was President of the Rutgers Equestrian Team, she rode Equestrian in England, placing 7th in the world. She was a member of the Rockbridge Hunt Club.
Cheryl is survived by her parents Robert and Marion Main; fiancé David Rhodenizer; brother Robert E. Main (Roxanne); Uncle Deacon Paul Bubeck (Cathy), Uncle James Main (Hazel), Aunt Carol Bubeck, Aunt Alice Bennett, and Aunt Nancy May (Ted); nephews: Robert Main, Ian James; nieces: Justine Evangelisti, Audry Duncan, Rachael Wells; cousins: Paul Bubeck, Cate Bubeck, Ward Bubeck, and Donna Bubeck,Linda DiMattio, Michael Hayes, John Bennett and Ken Bennet; and per pets “Lil D”, Brewster, and Paulie.

Born in Salem, NJ, Herb and his late wife Clare Peterson Jobson were long time owners of The Clare guest house in Ocean City, NJ. After retirement from Airwork Corp in Millville he moved to Oaks of Weymouth. He was a volunteer at the Train Museum in Tuckahoe, NJ.
He is predeceased by sisters, Dorothy Rambo, Lenora Anuszewski and nephew William Rambo. Survived by daughter’s Cheryl Peterson of Mays Landing, Barbara Peterson Himber of Granada Hills, CA, and grandchildren Guy Himber, Julie Himber, and great grandson, Vaughn Himber, nephews Rob Rambo, wife Josephine and grand niece Jacquelyn, Steve Rambo and grand nephew and niece William Rambo and Kim Cruz.

Claire Elizabeth Fields (Tomaselli), 68 of Milmay went home to be with the Lord on August 11, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Claire was born January 21st, 1944 in Philadelphia, PA. She graduated Mastbaum High School in 1961. She worked for the Title Co. of New Jersey for 23 years and most recently was employed by John J. Lehman Searches, LLC. She was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Church. Fondly remembered by her friends and family has St. Claire. Her greatest accomplishment in life was her family. She loved her husband and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her parents Francis Tomaselli and Elizabeth Tomaselli, her brothers Francis, Leo and William Tomaselli and her grandson Colin Patrick Fields. She is survived by her husband of 48 years Robert Fields; her children Colleen Ross (Danny), Kathleen Glick ( Steve), Michael Fields and Kellyann Fields; five Grandchildren: Michelle McGuire, Veronica, Abigail, and Madison Glick, and Justin Fields; Her brother Joseph Tomaselli, sister-in laws, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Marjorie V. Grinnell (nee Hagar) – 94 passed away peacefully on August 16th, 2012. Born on August 1, 1918 in New Bedford, MA, she most recently had lived in Leesburg, FL before moving to Mays Landing, NJ in February, 2008.

She was predeceased by her husband, Malcolm H. Grinnell and a daughter, Jean F. Smart. She will be truly missed by her son, Robert C. Grinnell and his wife, Arlene of Colonia, NJ. She was a wonderful grandmother to her six grandchildren, Chris Smart, Eric (Melanie) Smart, Cheryl (Joe) Bonsall, Lorie (Neil) Oberdick, Robert (Wendi) Grinnell and Craig Grinnell. She also cherished her 9 great-grandchildren.

Marjorie was an avid reader, and she always had a good story to tell. She loved to laugh and had a great sense of humor. She was a beach lover and spent many days on the beaches of Manasquan with her family before she moved to Florida in 1986. She enjoyed gardening, and loved watching the birds and small animals, especially chipmunks. Her family will cherish her memory and the things she did for them, especially “Christmas pie”, a tradition that her granddaughters have continued.

Marjorie loved her friends and the staff at Woodview Estates and was most recently cared for by the staff at Compassionate Care Hospice.

A viewing will be held on Monday, August 20th from 3-7pm at Boakes Funeral Home in Mays Landing. Burial will be in Leesburg, Florida. Genevieve C. Miller, 86 of Mays Landing, died on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at Sea Shore Gardens in Galloway. She was born on November 19, 1924 in Birmingham, NJ and was the youngest child of Lillian and Charles Mason.
Genevieve worked at The Cotton Mill in Mays Landing for 8 years and Wheaton Plastics for 9 1/2 years. She was a member of the DAV Auxiliary and a long standing member of The United Methodist Church of Mays Landing.
She was preceded in death by her parents Lillian Foulks Mason and Charles Mason, three sisters Elizabeth Cline, Ada Jackson, and Thelma Estelow, two brothers Louis Cline and Joseph Cline, a husband Joseph A. Miller, Sr.
She is survived by her son Joseph A. Miller, Jr., Niece Genevieve L. Hewitt and husband Everett, Great Nieces Nancy Lynn Hartwick and husband Andrew, Darlene Burger and husband Mike, and Great Nephew John Mangold and wife Damaris, and many great-great nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend her viewing on Saturday, August 25, 2012 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM and services starting at 11:00 AM at Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main Street in Mays Landing. Burial will take place directly after services at the Union Cemetery on Somers Point Mays Landing Road.

Sylvia Burgos, 44, of Chatsworth, NJ, passed away suddenly on August 21, 2012, as the result of a Motor Vehicle Accident.
Sylvia was born and raised in Egg Harbor City. She was a 1985 graduate with honors of Oakcrest High School and graduated with honors with a degree in Criminal Justice from Stockton College. She was a Probation officer in Camden County for 13 years and most recently in Burlington County.
Sylvia will be sadly missed but never forgotten by her husband of 25 years Ivan, her two children, Cassandra (Neal Trivedi) and Ivan J., her mother Carmen Cruz, her Father Gabriel Delgado (Judy), her sister Jeanette Zayas (Jose), her two brothers, Gabriel and Michael Delgado, and her two nieces, Jennifer and Jillian Zayas, her aunt Migdalia Leon, her two cousins Tony and Nick Leon, her brother-in-law Harry Burgos (Abigail) and their daughter Gladymar.
A viewing will be held on Monday, August 27th, from 11am-1pm, at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where reflections will be shared at 1pm. Burial will be in Egg Harbor Cemetery.
