Isabelle “Tinker” Shaffer (Lewis), 93, was born March 3, 1919 and passed away, November 16, 2012 in Somers Point. She lived the last 32 years with husband Bill, until his death in 2002, and their son and daughter in law, in Mays Landing during the summer months and wintering in Port Charlotte Florida. Survived by daughter, Fran Turreen (Len), son Billy (Sue), grand daughters, Leah McDonnell (Shawn) and Kristin Marr (Kevin), great grand daughters, Rylee, Tanis, Kasey and Coryn McDonnell and Makenna, Abby and “The Boy”, Cooper Marr. She spent many happy times with all of us and friends at family celebrations and will be sadly missed. We all thank her for the memories. In addition to being a working daughter, wife, mother, grand mother, great grand mother and our friend, Tinker was probably best known as an athlete. Her documented athletic accomplishments began during her years at Ocean City H.S. She lettered ten times in basketball, baseball and swimming while maintaining a B+ average. After high school she continued setting scoring records, winning scoring titles, leading her teams, Smith Lumber and the Bobbies to basketball championships. In 1940, Tinker was offered a contract with a professional basketball team in Wilmington, Del. Softball came next, leading her team, the Rome Rebels in the Atlantic City League to the championship. At thirty-one, she tried bowling. Winning high average in the Tri-County Women’s Bowling Association for thirteen years. Averaging 195, in 1966, she was ranked sixth in the country. Tinker’s name appeared at the top of the Press 200 Club for years winning the scoring title and the roll-off several times. In nineteen ninety-three, she was inducted into the Bowling Hall Of Fame. She continued bowling in two leagues, until last year, before her health became one opponent she couldn’t conquer. Services will be private. Thank you to everyone who was part of our mother’s life.
