Joseph B. Helfrich, Jr., 91, of Mays Landing, passed away on February 9, 2014 surrounded by his family. Born and raised in Pleasantville, he was a 1940 graduate of Pleasantville High School. Joe served in the US Army during WWII. He received the Purple Heart after being wounded at Monte Cassino, Italy in 1944 and also received the Atlantic County Veterans Medal. He married his wife Evelyn in 1945 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Pleasantville. Joe was in a family appliance business on Main Street in Pleasantville for many years then served as Purchasing Agent for Atlantic County for 17 years until his retirement in 1989. His memberships included: the Kiwanis Club, Purple Heart Post 155 of Somers Point, VFW Post 2389 Pleasantville, and the Pleasantville Volunteer Fire Company. He served as a Councilman in Pleasantville for ten years serving the last few years of his term as Fire Commissioner. Joe was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn M. Helfrich. He will deeply missed by his children: Jay (Gair) of EHT, David S. of Weymouth, and Roxann Moratelli (Jon) of Mays Landing; grandchildren: Joseph B. Helfrich IV (Stacey), Ian (Kirsten), Ann, Kristine (Dan) Kelly, Sarah Whittaker, Erin (Kevin) Husta, Jonathan Moratelli, and Matthew Moratelli; seven great-grandchildren; sister Nancy Madara (Elmer); sister-in-law Betty Helfrich; and several nieces and nephews. A viewing will be held on Friday, February 14th, from 10 AM – 12 Noon at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where services will be held at 12 Noon.
